MUTATIONS

As a painter uses paints, I use space. Through sketches and the reconstruction of space, I am able to portray distance, relationships, and individuals’ existence. My materials are everything related to space: an existing building, its surroundings, the objects and air remaining in an empty house, memories of former dwellers, even construction materials and tools.

My work is inspired by my field research in Hong Kong. I am attracted by the skyscrapers that seem to be built on mountains, multiplying bamboo scaffoldings, and town filled with unique colours and excess visual effects. In Japan, where I was born and raised, the countryside’s mountains and the cities’ buildings are separate; but in Hong Kong, these two geographies are close each other. Walking around, experiencing rising and falling terrain, I feel as if the mountains and buildings are sharing a house. Sometimes I even feel like the mountains are illuminated decorated with illuminations. The boundary that I felt in Japan was gone.

I was deeply moved like never before by the phenomenon of nature overlapping with the urban activities. I believe this was my enlightenment of understanding the connection between the raw breaths of humans that fill our living spaces, and nature that is even more active and progressing.

Other than my personal projects where I have presented art works, I have actively been involved in various projects such as running a noise label (UNONOISELESS), creating music videos and live performance videos (IN/AWT), designing CD covers, and running workshops for kids. This show is a space where I have reconstructed my past works based on the inspiration I received in Hong Kong. It also acts as a collaboration hub between myself and many musicians and video artists I have met through my past projects. In a place where it feels as if the critical point has been reached with the increasing population, I invite you to experience “MUTATIONS”- a space created through the diverse mixture and connections of relationships.

ミューテーションズ

画家が絵の具を使うように、私は空間を扱ってきた。既存の建築物や、周りの環境、空き家に残された物や空気、その家に住んでいた人の記憶、廃材、そして建築資材、それら建築を作る工程で使う道具に至るまで、全てが私にとってはメディウムとなる。空間のスケッチと再構成を通して、距離や関係、空間における個人の存在を測っている。

香港のフィールドリサーチで、この土地の巨大なエネルギーを受け止めることとなった。山々の中にそびえ立つビル群、増殖する竹の足場、特殊な色味と過剰な視覚効果が連続する街並み。私が生まれ育った日本では、山々からなる風景と、ビルが建ち並ぶ都会は切り離された印象があるが、香港はそれらが隣接している。歩いているとアップダウンの激しさに、山とビルが同居しているような、いわば、山にイルミネーションを施しているような感覚さえ抱いた。日本で意識していたような、境界の存在が消えていった。

この大地や自然環境と都市の活動がダブる印象は、かつてない感銘をうけた。それはきっと、私たちの生活空間を満たす、生々しくアクティブな人間たちの呼吸と、それ以上に動き続けている自然界が一つの世界で繋がっていることを強烈に感じたのだと思う。

私はこれまで、個人の作品として発表するアートワークにとどまらず、ノイズレーベルの運営（UNONOISELESS）、PVやライヴ映像の製作（IN/AWT）、CDのジャケットデザイン、子供たちとのワークショップに至るまで、多岐にわたり活動してきた。本展は、香港で得たインスピレーションを元に過去作品を再構成した空間であり、これまでの活動を通して出会った音楽家や映像作家との新たなコラボレーションの場としても機能している。人間が増え続け臨界点を超えたような場所で、種々雑多に接続された関係性から生み出される空間 ”MUTATIONS” を体感して欲しい。
